Life Drawing Excerpts

Some more items from my life drawing sessions for this terms weekly sessions. This term i decided to branch out and try more media as well as techniques.

The range of media used was charcoal, chalk, felt pens and acrylic ink and pencil.

I feel more confident using media other than pencils or chalk with the experience and practice that these sessions have given me. Personal favorites of mine would probably be the coloured inks due to the colour combination.

My least favorite was pencil, as although i ordinarily enjoy drawing with pencil, the scale at which i was drawing meant it was a less than optimal media due to the out lines being very faint.

Lava

This was a practice into creating a lava or magma like texture. This was done through a combination of both paint and a photo reference.
I started of with simple bright yellow lines to form the basis of the colour.
After i applied a lava photo over in order to get the texture or the while adjusting the opacity in order to merge it with the lava lines.
Finally i went over the lines with a luminosity layer to create the glowing heat effect. As a personal criticism, i feel it would have been better to adjust the hue to orange slightly to make the overall color warmer.

This problem was rectified in the resulting lava monster design. One short coming of the design is that i didn't put much detail into the rocks.

Steam Punk

Steam Punk

Steam Punk is a concept I've never engaged with and as such i found this task challenging but interesting at the same time. For this references became especially helpful in forming a design.

Eventually i moved onto making numerous sketches in an attempt to fully understand the aesthetic of steam punk.

Slowly i moved towards making a type of mercenary or thief type character aided by various gadgets and tools at her disposal.

Most of my designs had a mechanical arm accompanied by usually by 1 or 2 bronze smokestacks on her back. I eventually decided against this as i felt there would be a problem practically of having large steam cooling towers and mechanical arms made of various alloys being attached to smaller character.

Thus instead of  mechanical arms it would instead be a light weight skeletal frame.

I wanted to also incorporate a type of magic theme into the final design by having much of the characters tech be powered by a type of eldritch energy as opposed to coal or even some form of a dynamo.

Muscles

A collection of sketches studying human muscle anatomy. For me this was an experiment in body composition and body builds.
Muscles are slightly complicated when it comes to drawing, due to overlapping the sinew and tendons.

Temple

The objective of my modelling assignment is to constrcut a temple from a reference image. This gives me a chance to fully use what i've learnt from previous modelling tasks.
The temple itself can be deconstructed into mostly cubes and prisms, and thus does not present much of a problem.

Certain areas such as the foundations the roof can be slightly tricky due to the way they link together.

I want to limit how many individual shapes i use so instead i am mostly extruding the faces of existing shapes and keeping it as simple as possible.

Anatomy

A few sketches to continue on from body proportions, this time looking at the human skeleton to get a clear understanding of the human anatomy.
Although studying the human skeleton gave some insight i feel that it may also help in future when trying to design otherwise none human creatures as i could use many of these studies as references on creating a creatures skeletal structure.

Proportions

Body proportions is something i feel i should give more considerations when drawing characters. A new method i've learned aside from using shapes to make a makeshift skeleton for a character is also using boxes to determine the height and build.
